Luis Joaquín García, professor at the University of Jaén, presents the results of the DAREMOS initiative to the Andalusian Youth Institute.

One of the main responsible for the project met with the IAJ program advisor, José María Urbano, and the provincial deputy, Ildefonso Ruiz, to present the data of this project on the approach to emotional problems of young people.

11/5/2022.- Luis Joaquín García, professor at the University of Jaén (UJA), presented the results of the DAREMOS initiative, of which he is principal investigator together with the head of the Genomics Unit of the Biomedical Institute of Malaga, Juan Miguel Gómez Zumaquero, to José María Urbano, program advisor of the Andalusian Youth Institute (IAJ) and the provincial deputy of Ciudadanos, Ildefonso Ruiz.

In his presentation, Luis Joaquín García went into detail about the free help provided to more than 400 schoolchildren at risk of suffering emotional problems and their families. Through DAREMOS, a significant contribution has been made to the promotion of mental health and emotional wellbeing of young people between 12 and 18 years of age in Spain, with special emphasis on schoolchildren in the province of Jaén.

In turn, Luis Joaquín highlighted the success of DAREMOS in improving the detection of adolescents at high risk of developing emotional problems such as anxiety or depression with the support of disciplines such as linguistics, computer science or epigenetics. The UJA professor emphasized “the relevance of the interest of legislative institutions in the promotion of mental health and emotional well-being and in the prevention of suicide, which is becoming one of the biggest problems among young people”. In this regard, he insisted that “without early detection, there is no access to intervention. It is essential to provide educational and healthcare personnel with detection tools that allow early detection of adolescents at risk, following the paradigm of selective or indicated prevention”.

For his part, Jose Maria Urbano praised “the work led from the UJA in favor of the mental health of young people” and invited the PROEM Network team to participate in one of the round tables of the conference ‘Dialogues with the Andalusian youth’, focused on mental health and well-being, which will be held in Seville on Thursday, May 12. Meanwhile, Ildefonso Ruiz has presented different options for collaboration with the Provincial Council of Jaen to propose to the institution the establishment of an agreement that allows the structuralization of the DAREMOS initiative in rural and urban areas throughout the province.

The DAREMOS initiative is a project co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the Ministry of Economy and Knowledge of the Andalusian Regional Government and the participation of UJA researchers Luis Joaquín García, Lourdes Espinosa and Belén Diez and researchers from the Genomics Unit of the Institute of Biomedical Research of Malaga (IBIMA), Juan Miguel Gómez and María Jesús Pinto, in collaboration with Yotta, spin off of the UJA. In addition, the Instituto de la Juventud (INJUVE) of the Ministry of Social Rights and Agenda 2030, the Asociación Española de Ayuda Mutua contra Fobia Social y Trastornos de Ansiedad (AMTAES), the Confederación de Organizaciones de Psicopedagogía y Orientación de España (COPOE), and the Consejo de la Juventud de España (CJE) are part of the project’s External Advisory Board.
