UNIA offers an international meeting for the health and emotional well-being of young people within its Summer Courses

It will be held from August 23 to 25 at the Antonio Machado headquarters in Baeza.

9/6/2022.- The International University of Andalusia (UNIA) is hosting an international meeting for the health and emotional well-being of young people. It will take place from 23 to 25 August at the Antonio Machado headquarters in Baeza, within the framework of the Summer Courses organized by this university institution.

“Emotional problems are the most underdetected and undertreated in young people. Without detection there is no possibility for adolescents to access evidence-based interventions. In addition, there is the pandemic generated by Covid-19, which has become a worldwide health emergency,” says Luis Joaquín García, Professor of Psychology at the University of Jaén (UJA) and coordinator of the meeting. Covid-19 has had consequences that are not only physical, but also cover multiple aspects of health and emotional well-being. In this sense, initiatives such as DAREMOS and PROCARE have contributed to alleviate the emotional problems suffered by young people during confinement and de-escalation,” he says.

In that sense, this interdisciplinary meeting aims to analyze the current situation from different perspectives and shed light on initiatives that can be of use to society, and has as its main objective not only to listen to experts in the field but also to legislators and young people themselves, who have much to contribute so that their opinions are considered in the establishment of social, educational and health policies.

“We are late to the health pandemic, but as a society we cannot afford to be late to a mental health pandemic again. Urgent investment in this area is a necessity in the face of the massive increase in emotional problems in recent months. A resilient Spain needs resilient citizens and a society has no future without emotionally healthy adolescents,” he concludes.

Along with Luis Joaquín García, researchers and experts from different fields will be part of the large group of speakers participating in this international meeting. Among others, will participate: UJA researchers, Lourdes Espinosa, Belén Díez, Arturo Montejo and Manuel Vivas; the coordinator of the Youth Council of Spain, Ricardo Blázquez; the researcher of the Miguel Hernández University of Elche, José Antonio Piqueras; the professor of the Universitat Rovira i Virgili, Josefa Canals; Eva Reina, member of the European Youth Information and Counselling Agency (ERYICA); the spokesperson for Ciudadanos in the Provincial Council of Jaén, Ildefonso Ruiz; the director of the Genomics Unit of the Biomedical Research Institute of Malaga (IBIMA), Juan Miguel Gómez; and Inmaculada Nieto, member of the Provincial Technical Team for Educational and Vocational Guidance of the Territorial Delegation of Education of Cordoba.

The meeting will be face-to-face and is open to students and graduates in Psychology and related areas, legislators, counselors, education and health professionals and the general public. It will cover a total of 20 hours distributed in three days and scholarships and registration grants can be applied for until June 10.
