Luis Joaquín García, Professor of Psychology at the University of Jaén, evaluates possible synergies between the PROEMO Network and the Seville City Council

New telematic meeting with the General Director of Family, Equality, Youth and Associations of the Sevillian City Council, Laura Martínez, to analyze the feasibility of the implementation of the PROCARE initiative in the young population of Seville and the progress of PROADEMO.

31/10/2023.- Luis Joaquín García, Professor of Psychology at the University of Jaén (UJA), and Laura Martínez, General Director of Family, Equality, Youth and Associations of the Seville City Council, have met again to continue evaluating possible synergies between the PROEMO Network and the Seville City Council.

The UJA researcher has updated him on the schedule of actions led by the network (RED2022-134247-T) of excellence PROEMO, funded by the Ministry of Science and Innovation and the State Research Agency. Its objective is to prepare a report and roadmap for 2025, aimed at detecting current deficiencies and providing recommendations for the promotion of adolescent health and emotional well-being.

This network, coordinated by the UJA, has the participation of researchers from other national public and private universities such as the Universitat Rovira i Virgili, the Universidad Miguel Hernández, the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, the Universidad de Almería, the Universidad de Deusto and the Universidad de Málaga, together with the Instituto de Investigación Biomédica de Málaga (IBIMA), and an External Advisory Board integrated by the Instituto de la Juventud de España (INJUVE), attached to the Ministry of Social Rights and Agenda 2030, Spanish Youth Council (CJE), the European Youth Information and Counselling Agency (ERYICA), the Princess of Girona Foundation (FPdGi), the Integral Health group of the FELGTBI+, the Confederation of Organizations of Psychopedagogy and Guidance of Spain (COPOE), the Asociación Española de Ayuda Mutua contra Fobia Social y Trastornos de Ansiedad (Amtaes), the Asociación Andaluza de Técnicos de Juventud (AATJ) and the Asociación Asturiana para la atención y el cuidado de la infancia (Asaci).

They have also analyzed the feasibility and benefits of implementing PROCARE among the youth of Seville. PROCARE is the first transdiagnostic initiative of selective prevention at international level that has demonstrated its effectiveness in the intervention of adolescents at risk (PROCARE+) and at high risk (PROCARE-I) of developing emotional problems such as anxiety or depression. Currently, they are already being successfully implemented in other parts of Spain, such as the Balearic Islands, and Andalusia, such as the municipality of Marmolejo in the province of Jaén.

PROCARE (PID 2019-111138RB-I00/AEI/10.13039/501100011033) arises from a project funded by the Ministry of Science and Innovation, involving a team of researchers from the UJA, formed by Luis Joaquín García, Lourdes Espinosa and José Antonio Muela, Mar Díaz, Manuel Vivas, David Jiménez, Laura Zafra, Pilar Martínez and Jesús Sánchez, the researcher from the University of Miami (USA), Jill Ehrenreich-May, as well as a team from the Universitat Rovira i Virgili, led by researcher Josefa Canals and a team from the Universitat Miguel Hernández, led by researcher José Antonio Piqueras.

Finally, they delved into the first steps of the PROADEMO project (PDC2022-133401-I00/AEI/10.13039/501100011033, PROmocionAnDo la salud y bienestar EMOcional de los adolescentes en el sector educativo, sanitario y la sociedad’), financed by the Ministry of Science and Innovation, the State Research Agency and the European Union through the “Next Generation EU” funds within the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan. An initiative that aims to design and develop a digital training package, aimed at school staff, health personnel, youth information point workers and young people themselves, so that they can improve their skills and knowledge to establish and provide mental health services to adolescents at risk of developing emotional problems as a result of the pandemic.

For her part, Laura Martinez has proposed to the PROEMO Network the participation in a conference on mental health to be held in the Sevillian capital on November 28th. This activity is in line with the information and awareness campaign on youth mental health problems, organized by the City Council of Seville on October 10 on the occasion of World Mental Health Day and in which the PROEMO Network was one of the participating entities.
