Staff of the Psychology Department of the University of Jaén presents the PROCARE Jaén initiative to students and teachers of the Maristas School in the capital city of Jaén

The PROCARE protocol is being implemented free of charge among adolescents between 12 and 18 years of age in the province of Jaén, thanks to funding from the Provincial Council of Jaén through its Jaenícolas brand.

05/04/2024.- Inés Álamo and María Jesús Molina, both staff of the Psychology Department of the University of Jaén (UJA), have presented this morning the PROCARE Jaén initiative to students and teachers of the Maristas School (Santa María de la Capilla) of the capital of Jaén. Specifically, they have exposed the keys to all courses of Secondary Education, from 1st to 4th ESO, as well as Baccalaureate, both 1st and 2nd.

PROCARE Jaén is a project that aims to implement the PROCARE protocol (‘Selective prevention through a transdiagnostic intervention for adolescents at risk of emotional problems’), to improve the health and emotional well-being of adolescents in the province of Jaén aged 12 to 18. The initiative is being carried out thanks to funding from the Provincial Council of Jaén, through its Jaenícolas brand.

The program is carried out in three phases. In the first phase, the adolescent and his or her family complete a questionnaire on emotional aspects telematically. All participants receive information on the results of their state of health and emotional well-being free of charge.

In the second phase, adolescents can also benefit free of charge from a workshop on emotional strengthening and resilience in the face of present and future adversities, which consists of eight sessions. In this way, they learn to cope with risk situations and enhance their communication skills. They also receive an additional tailored module on situations that make them feel vulnerable.

Finally, both six months and one year after the end of the workshop, they can carry out reminiscence sessions to consolidate the benefits acquired and evaluate the progress of the participating students on an emotional level.

This initiative is supported by the experience of PROCARE, an R+D+i project (PID 2019-111138RB-I00/) funded by MICIU/AEI/10.13039/501100011033/ (Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities and the State Research Agency), in which a team of researchers from the UJA, led by Luis Joaquín García, Lourdes Espinosa and José Antonio Muela and Mar Díaz, the researcher from the University of Miami (USA), Jill Ehrenreich-May, as well as a team from the University Rovira i Virgili, led by researcher Josefa Canals and a team from the University Miguel Hernández, led by researcher José Antonio Piqueras.

In addition, the Instituto de la Juventud (INJUVE), attached to the Ministry of Youth and Children, the Asociación Española de Ayuda Mutua contra Fobia Social y Trastornos de Ansiedad (AMTAES), the Confederación de Organizaciones de Psicopedagogía y Orientación de España (COPOE), the Youth Group of the Federación Estatal de Lesbianas, Gais, Trans, Bisexuales, Intersexuales y más (FELGTBI+), the Consejo de la Juventud de España (CJE) and the Fundación Princesa de Girona (FPdGi) are part of the project’s External Advisory Board.
