URV professor Josefa Canals reports the results of the initiative to promote emotional well-being in young people ‘PROCARE’ to the director of the Pacte Nacional de Salut Mental.

He explained the benefits of its implementation among primary school students to Magda Casamitjana.

15/11/2022.- Josefa Canals, Professor of Psychology at the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV) and member of the PROEM Network, recently presented the results of the initiative to promote mental health in adolescents ‘PROCARE’ to Magda Casamitjana, director of the Pacte Nacional de Salut Mental in Catalonia.

In this context, Josefa Canals explained to Magda Casamitjana the benefits of the implementation of the PROCARE initiative in the field of Primary Education in Catalonia. “The results of the intervention carried out by experts from the URV, the University of Jaén, the Miguel Hernández University of Elche and the University of Miami indicate the reduction of emotional problems, the improvement of the subjective quality of life and the greater regulation of emotions among the young participants, and among their families,” explains Josefa Canals.

The meeting was part of a working meeting between Anna Huguet and Josefa Canals, coordinators of the Student Psychological Care Service of the URV, and Magda Casamitjana herself, in which they requested more preventive support for the emotional problems of the school population and university students. In this sense, taking into account the data collected by the Student Psychological Service, collaboration was requested for the adaptation and implementation of an online intervention program for emotional problems in URV students.

Given the increase in emotional problems among the young population, the ‘PROCARE’ initiative has been developed as the first transdiagnostic initiative of selective prevention at international level and has demonstrated its efficacy in the intervention of adolescents at risk (PROCARE+) and at high risk (PROCARE-I) of developing emotional problems such as anxiety or depression. “In addition, we value that the development and incorporation of preventive intervention in the prepubertal stage (PROCARE-Children) can help reduce problems in adolescence,” stresses Josefa Canals.

Institutions such as the Instituto de la Juventud (INJUVE) of the Ministry of Social Rights and Agenda 2030, the Asociación Española de Ayuda Mutua contra Fobia Social y Trastornos de Ansiedad (AMTAES), the Confederación de Organizaciones de Psicopedagogía y Orientación de España (COPOE), the Youth Group of the Federación Estatal de Lesbianas, Gais, Trans, Bisexuales, Intersexuales y más (FELGTBI+) and the Consejo de la Juventud de España (CJE) are part of its External Advisory Board.
