Luis Joaquín García presents the initiatives for the promotion of emotional wellbeing in young people, DAREMOS and PROCARE, to the Castrillón City Council.

The professor of the University of Jaén and main responsible of these two projects presented his results to the technician of Health Education of the Asturian locality.

12/1/2023.- The professor of the University of Jaén (UJA) and main responsible for DAREMOS and PROCARE, Luis Joaquín García, presented the results of these two initiatives for the promotion of mental health in young people to the City Council of Castrillón (Principality of Asturias).

Specifically, Luis Joaquín García presented the impact of the implementation of these two projects to Maribel Panadero, Health Education technician of the Social Services area of this Asturian town, with special emphasis on the data extracted from the adolescents participating in 2021 in the Principality of Asturias.

In this way, Luis Joaquín García developed the keys to DAREMOS, a pioneering worldwide interdisciplinary initiative (Psychology, Corpus Linguistics, Big Data, Epigenetics and Anthropology) focused on the early identification of adolescents at high risk of developing emotional problems. Likewise, he explained the functioning of PROCARE, the first selective prevention program aimed at young people between 12 and 18 years of age at risk of suffering emotional problems at a stage conditioned by the psychosocial difficulties of the post-pandemic COVID-19. “The results of the intervention carried out indicate the reduction of emotional problems, the improvement of the subjective quality of life and the greater regulation of emotions among the young participants, and among their families.”

For her part, Maribel Panadero expressed her interest in implementing these two initiatives during this academic year in the areas of Cudillero, Castrillón and the Mancomunidad de Cinco Villas in order to help young people at risk of suffering emotional problems, or who are already suffering from them. In this sense, the Castrillón City Council proposed the organization of training sessions that would allow DAREMOS and PROCARE experts to explain in depth their research to institutions, entities and associations of these Asturian areas that work in the field of child and youth mental health.

Luis Joaquín García thanked the Castrillón City Council for its interest in defending the health and emotional wellbeing of young people in this post-pandemic stage. “It is crucial that any vulnerable young person who may be at risk of suffering emotional difficulties can receive the support they need to prevent negative consequences in their personal and professional development,” he stressed. “There is no health without mental health and no future without emotionally healthy young people, so a resilient society needs resilient citizens.”

The DAREMOS initiative is a nationwide project with the participation of researchers from different departments of the UJA and the Institute of Biomedical Research of Malaga (IBIMA), in collaboration with Yotta Code, spin off of the UJA.

The PROCARE initiative is a nationwide project involving professionals from the Psychology Department of the UJA, the Rovira i Virgili University, the Miguel Hernández University of Elche and the University of Miami (USA).

The Instituto de la Juventud (INJUVE) of the Ministry of Social Rights and Agenda 2030, the Asociación Española de Ayuda Mutua contra Fobia Social y Trastornos de Ansiedad (AMTAES), the Confederación de Organizaciones de Psicopedagogía y Orientación de España (COPOE), the Youth Group of the Federación Estatal de Lesbianas, Gais, Trans, Bisexuales, Intersexuales y más (FELGTBI+) and the Consejo de la Juventud de España (CJE) are part of the External Advisory Board of both projects.
